Put a $68 huggie and a $22 huggie side by side in a product photo and almost nobody can tell them apart. That is not a failure of the photograph. At the resolution of a phone screen, they genuinely look the same.
So this is an attempt to answer the question honestly, using a pair off our own shelf: where does the other $46 go, and is any of it worth paying for.
The visible surface of a gold earring is the cheapest part of it. Almost the entire cost difference between a $22 pair and a $68 pair sits in three places you cannot see in a photo: what the metal underneath is made of, how thick the gold layer is, and what the post is made of.
In the US, the word vermeil is legally defined. It requires a sterling silver base and a gold layer of at least 2.5 microns. The words gold plated and gold electroplate require only 0.175 microns, which is roughly fourteen times thinner and can sit on top of any metal at all.

Every gold-coloured earring under about $300 is a base metal with gold on the outside. The question is only which base metal.
The cheap answer is brass, sometimes zinc alloy. Both are perfectly functional metals. Brass in particular has been used in jewelry for centuries and there is nothing shameful about it. The problem is what happens after the coating wears through, which it always eventually does. Brass under gold turns green against skin, and zinc alloy tends to pit.
Sterling silver underneath behaves differently for one specific reason: when the gold wears thin, what shows through is silver. A worn vermeil piece looks like a two-tone piece. A worn plated-brass piece looks broken.
This is the single decision that matters most and it is the one brands are quietest about. If a listing says "gold plated" without naming the base metal, assume brass. Brands that use sterling say so, because it costs them roughly four times more and they want the credit.
How to check it yourself in ten seconds
Weight. Silver has a density of 10.49 g/cm³. Brass is around 8.5. That means an identical shape in sterling weighs roughly 20 to 25 percent more than the same shape in brass. If two hoops of the same size and thickness feel noticeably different in the hand, you are feeling the base metal, not the finish.
Layer two: how thick the gold actually is
This is where most of the money goes and where the language is deliberately slippery. The US Federal Trade Commission sets minimum thicknesses for each term, and the gaps between them are enormous.

Read the first row again. A brand can legally print "gold" on a listing with a layer 0.175 microns thick. A sheet of paper is around 100 microns. That coating is roughly one five-hundredth of a sheet of paper, sitting on a metal you cannot identify, on a surface that rubs against your skin twelve hours a day.
Vermeil is the only one of the four terms that constrains both variables at once. It is the reason we use the word and the reason it appears on every gold listing we have. Our 18K layer measures [[MICRONS]] microns.
"Heavy gold electroplate" is the term to be most careful with. It matches vermeil on thickness and sounds more impressive, but it places no requirement at all on the metal underneath. It is the most technically-accurate way to describe plated brass.
Layer three: the post
The post is a few millimetres of wire, it costs almost nothing, and it is the only part of an earring that goes inside your body.
It is also, industry-wide, the most common place to cut a corner, because a plated finish on the visible face and a base-metal post look identical in every photograph ever taken. The friction of putting an earring in and taking it out wears any coating fastest at exactly that point, and the exposed metal underneath then sits in the piercing channel.
Ours are sterling all the way through. That is what "post included" means in the line at the top of every page on this site, and it is not a throwaway phrase: it is the specific claim we would most want a customer to hold us to.
On the sensitivity question specifically, we wrote a longer piece on which metals actually work for sensitive ears. The short version relevant here: the EU limits nickel release to 0.2 micrograms per square centimetre per week for anything that goes through a piercing. The United States has no federal equivalent. A US brand can say "hypoallergenic" and mean nothing by it, because the word carries no enforced definition here at all.

The row worth staring at is the last one. A 10x markup on materials is standard in this industry and we have written about why we do not do it. The relevant point for this article is arithmetic: at a 10x markup, a brand can use sterling and thick vermeil and still land at $200, or use brass and flash plating and land at $60. Both of those are the same business decision. Only one of them is visible on the product page.

We do not sell solid gold
Solid 14K would be more durable than any vermeil and would hold value in a way plating never will. It would also put this pair somewhere north of $400. We think most people are better served by a piece they can wear daily without anxiety than by a piece they own but protect. That is a judgment call, and if you want an heirloom, we are the wrong shop.
We do not claim the plating is permanent
It is not. No plating is. A 2.5 micron layer worn daily against skin, fabric, and sunscreen will thin over years. Vermeil buys you a long runway and a graceful failure, not immortality. Any brand promising a gold finish that never wears is describing solid gold or lying.

How to evaluate any brand in about a minute
- Search the listing for the base metal. If "925", "sterling", or "silver" does not appear anywhere in the description of a gold-coloured piece, it is almost certainly brass.
- Look for a micron figure. Brands with thick plating publish the number. Brands without it use adjectives: thick, premium, luxury.
- Check whether the post is described separately. Silence on the post is informative. It is the cheapest thing to upgrade and the loudest thing to advertise if you have done it.
- Note which legal term is used. Vermeil constrains the base metal. Every other term does not.
- Weigh it when it arrives. Compare against a piece you already own of similar size. Density does not lie.
